My guess was that a vacuum condition in the intake manifold or combustion chamber caused the air to be pulled thru the intercooler, guess that's not true.
My explanation could have been clearer. As you said, the exhaust gases spin the turbine which allows the intake air to be compressed in the first place. I started explaining from the fresh air side, which isn't the best place to begin from.
