To Re-iterate what AMG said...
A turbo does the same thing to whatever car it's attached.
Exhaust gasses (high pressure, high heat) spin the impeller turbine on the turbo. Since, as AMG said, the impeller turbine is attached by a solid shaft to the compressor turbine, the exhaust gasses provide the power to pressurise the air that will be used as intake. This allows the cylinders to get more air than in the absence of the turbo. On thing that AMG said that I would ahv said differently is that once the intake air is compressed by the turbo, it is "pushed" (not "pulled") through the intercool and eventually into the cylinders.
A turbo really takes advantage of the energy in the exhaust gasses that would otherwise be lost (really it's the pressure energy...which is the result of combustion... i.e. heat and axpansion). It's a brilliant idea.
In a 9000 Aero (5spd), the engine must be spinning at about 2000 RPM in order to produce enough exhaust to power the turbo to it's maximum boost... below that RMP, there simply isn't enough exhaust gas moving through it. Beyond that RMP, the pressure that the turbo produces is controlled by the car's engine management computer (electronic Control Unit - ECU). The "Stages" that hanesj75 talks about are varying modifications to the ECU and, at higher stages, hardware.
Hope this helps.
