The gas pedal will feel stiffer if your used to driving cars with a fully electronic throttle body. The reason being there is a throttle wire on a 9k creating a direct connection, i like it that way better because of less tire squeal from the extra resistance. You can tell when i'm driving my mothers van or dads buick, i'll leave a trail on the road.

The ticking sound may just be the valve tappets if the car hasn't been driven in a while. As the oil gets through them that ticking will go away.

To guide you in looking for the oil residue. Looking right at the engine from the front, look at the right side of the engine where the block and cylinder head meet. This is the usual location that any oil or coolant will leak if the headgasket is bad. If it looks really messy then be wary off the headgasket. Being at the dealership they will not know how much coolant if any has had to be added lately. A little bit of seepage though in my experience is normal. If really bad you might be considering 900 to 1400 in headgasket replacment, lower being a indy and higher being a saab dealership. Nothing says you can't do it on your own.

Pull the plugs and check them quickly, make sure they are the proper NGK (can't remember off the top of my head) and look at the tips as they will tell you lots about how the engine is running. The price sounds good, even better being at a ford dealership so your picking it up for less already.

Things to be wary off.
1. Heater core: its a pita of a job, did mine in december in 8 degree weather, it really is a four hour job the first time round.
2. Exhaust: if its the original its probably got a whole in it somewhere and the flex pipe will probably need attention.
3. Radiator: Personal experience with me shows the oem radiator gets weaker than most as the years go by, watch out for pin hole leaks that show up only when at temperature.
4. Thermostats: Very reliable actually but keep an eye on it because if it goes could lead you to headgasket job.
5. Automatic Transmission: Not as much as a worry on third gen 9k but they are expensive to replace
6. DI cassette: A spare is a must have, no if ands or but. Make sure to have the proper NGK plugs in there with the correct gap, will help DI live longer as well as to protect the engine. The DI uses the plugs as a knock sensor, any other plug and the DI won't function properly.
7. BPC valve: If you experience a lost of boost or for some reason extremly high boost (not the normal) replace the bpc valve with a good one, has led to some fried resistors in the ECU, prior posts in the archive.

Overall the third generation 9000 is the best no matter what. The things i've listed above are the main weak points but with a little attention to detail you'll never get caught off guard. Very realible car and still one of the safest. I've gone through about all the weak spots on my car in a short period after 2 quiet years. Being in college makes it difficult but well worth the saftey in my opinion.
