Jeff~
That's a nice pair of BMW's you've had. Never driven an Alpina, but the e34 M5 was a blast, as well as my dad's e30 M3 (50K miles). (There's a nice looking e34 Alpina B10 on ebay right now... hmmmm!)
Greg~
As for the Aero, it comes with a center armrest, at least the early ones. I think that they all did, but don't hold me to it... my '93 did.
And, as I currently own a 5-spd Aero, I don't ever expect it to drive or handle like a BMW or other RWD sports car. The suspension and, more importantly, the front-wheel drive limit it. However, for $7400 2 years ago, there's not a BMW I could find that: hauls two fully assembled bikes, gets 31 mpg, passes cars in 3rd gear like they just hit the brakes, and had fewer than 45K miles on the clock.
I know I'll own a RWD car again sometime (probably soon-ish), but as far as I'm concerned, there are very few do-it-all cars... and the 9000 Aero was my choice when I set out to find a car that would be my only car for a while. I have no regrets.
Good luck with the car search!
~Peter
