I have the center armrest that Nahum aluded to in my '88 9kt. It's nice on long drivers, and I don't think it's that much of a nuisance. Sometimes my kids kick it down from behind, as they sit in the back seat.
As for the shifter position, I would suspect that your driving position is more reclined. I notice that drivers of American and Japanese cars often like to sit in a reclined position, but the intended driving position in a Saab is more upright. Maybe a 15 degree angle. One dealer told me that a Saab review talked about the "throne-like" seats.
I would also second what Nahum said - if you like performace, wait for a 9000 Aero to come your way, or perhaps get a '98 9000 CSE, which had the Aero engine (same engine, different turbo and software, actually). However, the '98 doesn't have the Aero seats. The Aero wasn't manufactured in '98 - last year for it was '97. I do notice that Aero asking prices on the Saabnet classifieds are significantly above Kelley Bluebook, so not sure if you can get a good deal on one, unless it needs a lot of work.
My wife had a '95 CSE, and it really isn't a performance-minded car, although it was quick. The suspension needs to be firmed up, IMHO. So you could get a CSE, do some suspension work, find some Aero seats from a wrecked car, something like that. They're fun cars to work on.
