Still pretty safe Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 9 Jan 2008 09:15:36 In Reply to: How safe are our cars being 10 years old?, masupra, Wed, 9 Jan 2008 07:49:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Short of losing a little structural integrity due to fatigue, and some wear in seatbelts, the cars are just as safe as when new. And they were pretty safe then.
In 1998 I had an accident with my 1986 900 turbo. 65 MPH on an overpass, just as an icy mist started to fall. Car spun out, slammed head-on into the concrete bridge, spun, rear-ended into the concrete bridge.
This is a no-airbag car - just seatbelts. My passenger and I OPENED the doors and stepped out. The doors worked fine. The manual sunroof opened and closed. No distortion of the passenger cage. We were unharmed - shaken up and scared spitless, but not even a bruise.
The front end of the car was mashed to bits and looked horrible. The rear end of the car was mashed - nothing in the trunk would have survived, but I wasn't in the trunk. The car collapsed just like it was supposed to.
12+ year old car (would be 20+ years old now), no airbags. No injuries.
It's why I replaced it with a 9000 (also used, also 10 years old) a month later.
