Other than internet rumors, how does that test seem fake? Is anyone amazed that 15 years of engineering and crash testing has yielded much safer cars? Had the Volvo won out, it would have been nothing short of a total failure on the part of the Renault engineers.
Look closely, just after the crash footage. The Volvo DOES have an engine. It is simply pushed under the dash. There's a brief shot where the remains of it are visible, right in the primary impact zone. Futhermore, the test was done by 5th Gear, not Top Gear. Top Gear would not be above rigging such a test, but 5th Gear is more focused on informing their viewers.
I know everyone likes to pretend that their 10-15-20 year old cars are safe, but in reality they probably aren't any better than your average new Ford or Hyundai. Saftest car when new (15 years ago) doesn't count for much today. Not to say that our Saabs are unsafe, but there have been MANY advances in auto safety in the last decade. With that said, I'm sure that a 9000 is far safer than most other cars from the same era.
