"Safe" is always relative. Manufacturers tout side and front-offset crash test results. The IIHS does side crash tests at 30 mph - great if you get T-boned while in a school zone where everyone is staying at the speed limits, but not very real-world. Front-offset testing is done at 40 mph.
Once speeds hit 40 or 50 mph, it's a crap-shoot. No car will guarantee your safety. Saab (and Volvo, and Mercedes, and ...) all add safety features to cars that help improve survivability.
In an accident, I'd rather be in a 15 year old Saab than a new Ford Focus. Again, it depends. In a side-impact crash, I'd like to have the head and torso side impact airbags that are available in some cars. It won't guarantee you walk away, but they'll improve the odds. And it all comes down to odds.
There are so sure things, heck, I could twist my finger typing this, and the pain induce a heart attack and AAAAHHHH!
