And the space inside available with the seats down is pretty huge for the gas mileage it gets. And seats up my montrous baby stroller even fits inside.
Aren't parts overpriced for any car?
While the car and engine, etc may be outdated or becoming outdated, they are fairly reliable if maintained, and not having a car payment overcomes some of the other disadvantages (trouble finding quality mechanics). That also encourages me anyway to do as much as I can myself.
Yesterday I sold our mid-1980s bmw. Now that was a car I had great trouble working on, with less efficient gas mileage and not as much safety, space, and features. The person who bought it saw our 9000 and asked if it was a 1999 or 2000 (it's a '95 :) Same person also offered to sell us their daily driver which only got 12 mpg. No thanks.
I suppose if you drive it til it drops dead, the resale value isn't a concern. And I know (may be the way I drive) I rarely get under 25 mpg, though more of my driving is on the highway. Highway only I usually get 29-31 mpg which compares quite well I think to most new offerings (and often better than new pseudo-sports cars/whatever category a 9000 would fit in).
Anyway, driving in my 9000/900 is something I find enjoyable on otherwise annoying and boring drives. The seats are by far the most comfortable I've ever expeienced in a car. Sure there are some real annoyances, but the overall charm and fun of these cars more than makes up for that in my mind.
10 years ago I would have never considered driving a car more than 10 years old, but my '87 900 and '95 9000 have been among the most dependable cars I've had, and the oldest.
My only real gripe with the newer models is the automated climate control; I like the old fashioned knobs. I don't need the computer to think for me, especially when it's a bit wacky like mine is.
