Here's the deal: I bought my daugter a 9000 Saab because is was cheap and had great safety items (ABS, dual air bags). I am sure it had not been mantained well, Soon after I replaced the turbo myself, then the tranny went and I got a rebuild kit and rebuilt the trany and governor seals myself. I didn't do a lot or reserch on the 9000 but I did think it was funny the the cad was right under the oil pan and all the aftermarket places were selling heat shields and windows that you could clean slugh from the pan. Well, after my daughter has put about 30k miles on the car it has a bad rod baring and it is because of a slugged up pickup screen before the oil pump.
Now, what to do? This is where resale value would play a part in weather or not to rebuild the engine. If I spend 3 days R&R engine and maybe around $500 to $1K on machining, parts ect, I still have a 11 year old car that is worth maybe $1.5K. Can anyone see where I am going with this?
My thoughts are to get her into maybe a turbo boxer Subaru with the same performance and same or better MPG. I really like Saabs (my drive is a 04vert), but time and gas cost and resale and reliablity has passed me by for this application. What do you think?
