what has to be fixed and how much it will cost. Try to separate parts and labor. Then you can also decide whether you want it perfect or if workable and safe is enough. For example...

My daughter had an accident last summer that did front end damage--bumper grille, headlight, a little sheet metal. I found the parts at a bone yard and a local body shop did the work. The bumper is black on a white car, but that's OK,and saves repainting it. Then she was hit by a car in the winter and needed a front passenger door so I found one at a yard --same color!-- and the shop put it on. Since her '95 CS isn't worth a lot, plenty of people would say the repairs aren't worth the money. But both events wound up not costing a lot with a little leg work on my part--I went and got the parts and delivered them to the body shop with the car in each case.

I these cases there wasn't structural damage, so it was easier to do this. But if it's just sheet metal, lights, radiators and stuff, you can probably come out OK, especially if you can track down the parts. Sure, you may spend more than the car is worth, but worth is a relative term. It will be cheaper than a new/newer car, and if it's for a car you really like and plan to keep, then it may not be unreasonable.
