When I say "soft" shocks, I mean the Bilstein Touring or standard OEM shock for the 9K compared to the Bilstein HD versions. I believe the Touring units are still firmer than the stock Saab shocks. My suspicion is they are probably about like the stock Aero shocks which no longer seem to be available. I think this would be a good combination with Aero springs and SAS bars.
Reading the posts here over the past couple years, the verdict is mixed. Some say the HDs are hard-riding but tolerable, others say they are too stiff and are happy with the Touring shocks. Of course it's personal preference, filtered by where you live, how you drive and what you're looking for.
If I lived in a place with lovely smooth roads without frost heaves, potholes, and erratic maintenance a firmer suspension would be great. But here in New England where we have all of the above the Aero setup with SAS bars seems OK, and I'd be comfortable taking the car to the track. It will be interesting to see how the ride and handling change when I put on the winter tires (205/60x15 Nokian WRs) come November. And it remains to be seen what I think in January and February when the new crop of frost heaves arrive!
BTW, I expected the SAS bars to be a lot firmer on one-wheel bumps, but it really seems fine. Now, I went from worn out rear shocks and stock CSE springs to a new Aero suspension and SAS, so I'm getting a lot of change all at once, but it seems OK based on the last 2000 miles.
Also, 3 years ago I had done poly bushings in back and liked the change, and put them in front a year later. I found that was nice but all it did was crisp things up a bit. IMHO, you really need to get the roll out of the chassis and get all four tires working in a corner, and that's what bars do. Like anything else, there are trade-offs, but you do what works for you
