Timing chain tensioner doesn't seem to "kick in?" Posted by dbreid [Email] (#1192) [Profile/Gallery] (more from dbreid) on Tue, 13 Jan 2009 23:47:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
So I reassembled my WHOLE car (well, still jacked up, wheel off, etc), after double checking all the timing marks and everything on the sprockets etc.
So I filled it with coolant and oil and hooked up the battery and cranked it for a second. I immediately heard chain noise (not valve crashing, or anything drastic like that..) so I shut it off. Maybe just a couple of revs of the engine...
So I pulled the valve cover back off, and I have what seems to be "slack" between the cam sprockets. This baffled me, so I lined up TDC again by hand (rotating clockwise) and checked the chain and:
1.) My hash marks on the Cam sprockets line up with the arrows on the cam caps.
2.) The little hash marks on the cams themselves line up with the little grooves on the caps.
3.) I have 15 "bars" (links) between the marks on the cam sprockets.
4.) My Flywheel "0" lines up with the groove on the transmission (1993 Aero 5 speed).
So I can only assume that my cam tensioner didn't... ummm... tension?
I had bought a tensioner which was the pre-88 style by accident, so I reused the one I had in the car (the one with the plunger). I threaded the big part in, and then threaded the 12mm bolt with the spring and plunger afterwards.
What did I do wrong? Did I not give it enough time to run and get hydraulic pressure to the plunger? I just spent 4 solid days replacing stuff in this car. It would break my heart to have made a mistake at the end and mess it up.
Thoughts?
