Just an update on this. As I said in the first post, I was paranoid, so I pulled the 12mm bolt and plunger out of the tensioner, turned the crank over by hand a few times and checked and rechecked, and then threaded it back in and kinda helped the tensioner get seated a little by reaching into the timing chain area with my hand (Valve cover was off, obviously) and taking up the slack in the chain by hand. You could hear the tensioner "click" out and then when I reassembled everything the car ran like a dream.
Still need to burp the air out of the coolant, but overall, she seems to run basically perfect!
Thanks again to all who helped me.
