Ignition lockset steering locked

My steering column and ignition lockset locked up yesterday and I am looking for some advice on what will solve the problem.
1. Should I purchase and install a new lockset?
2. Should I get a new key made from VIN number or from numbers stamped into lock cylinder?
-I was able to free-up the lockset cylinder key right away by using a blow dryer which I put on it because I thought it might be frozen (zero degrees yesterday morning).
-Another factor is that yesterday morning (zero degrees!) I drove the front left wheel up on a makeshift wood ramp so that I could crawl under car and wire up a fallen exhaust pipe to prevent muffler from dragging while enroute to service said muffler.
-Last variable is that my '97 9K has 246K miles on it and the key or lock may be worn.
Advice would be greatly appreciated as exhaust just set me back a hefty sum despite having purchased (and received previous day) intermediate pipe from Eeuroparts. Had to purchase center and rear muffler from $ervice garage. A cold, bad day for me. -Bob
