Stuck lifter? and how to handle it.

Last Friday I was driving my '95CSE-185k with 3 Scouts and equipment for a weekend of camping and hiking. The cruise was set for 74mph, and a bit over 100mi into the trip there was a sudden hesitation in power as if it had water or something in the gas. It slowed down 5mph then reaccelerated to 74. I turned the radio off and heard knocking. I immediately stopped and checked the engine. There was a hard knocking coming from the top of the engine. I drove to the next exit ~ 1/2 mile away very gently and without much apparent loss of power. I parked it and had it towed back to Toledo on Sunday.
I have taken off the valve cover, and do not see any obvious problems. After reading about stuck valve lifters, I tried pressing on each hydraulic lifter with a screwdriver to see if there was good pressure. The 4 inside valves on the exhaust side 'seemed' like there was maybe 1/8" slack, or at least less resistance than the other valves for the first 1/8".
I don't know what I'm looking for really, does this make the lifter suspect? Past posts suggest using ATF or other cleaning routines to unstick lifters. Would this make sense to try, or am I asking for more trouble? I'm assuming that a bent valve would be the only other thing that would cause that kind of noise. Chain appears fine with about 1/2" of slack up and down between sprockets.
Thanks in advance, as always, for your help!
