To be as reasonable as possible Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 27 Jul 2009 03:54:03 In Reply to: Hydrogen generator on 9k ?, saabetized, Sat, 25 Jul 2009 02:26:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Any of the systems I've seen violate some basic laws of physics. These are laws that have really good experimental validation, so I trust them. Whenever the inventors are asked how they get around these basic laws of physics (i.e. conservation of energy), the usual response is a flurry of perfectly valid terms that sound good arranged in random order. They start with our version of reality and take a hard left.
Now, maybe somebody has found a loophole in basic physics - more power to them. However, it takes a lot of hard proof to call basic physics into question. Thinks like Maxwell's equations and gravity are not just close-minded barriers - the fall off a mountain will kill you, no matter how open-minded.
OK, that aside, I agree with vtsnaab. These toys aren't to be used on a modern car. Why? OK, yes, you could blow it up, but that's no different than the kid running nitrous and dialing the boost up to 11. The problem is that the engine controls were designed by those close-minded engineers stuck with their narrow view of physics. The engine control isn't designed to deal with hydrogen and extra oxygen. The engine can't take advantage of such stuff, so you likely won't see any advantage, assuming there is one. Just like if you were to run 110 octane fuel and pure oxygen, the car won't go faster. In fact, it'll run lean, hot, and blow up. Pretty much in that order. You'd need to modify the engine control to deal with different stuff coming in the intake.
That's the advantage of an old carb setup. You can mess with the mixture, and you don't have 12 different control loops and sensor feedbacks messing with your science experiment.
Now, I fully expect it to fail, but if you're going to give it as reasonable a shot as possible, eliminate as many variables as possible - that's the scientific method.
