Thanks for the tip, yeah my tips are new, craftsman, but maybe bolts were already not quite exact shape. Used a v_ce gr_ps on the lower two.
I was able to remove the 5 bolts holding retainer to transmission case on the drivers side.
It seems like there is a small bearing in the stub shaft housing. This bearing and its retainer look OK. Then, after removing shaft, there were two shims. Behind shims is a substantial bearing. This bearing looks to be intact, maybe a little off center, coundn't tell for sure.
What appears to be source of play is the splined opening that the splines on stub shaft slides into. This splined opening is behind the bearing. When I push it with finger pressure it moves back and forth a lot.
So it seems the play is not radial (side to side, like a worn bearing) but play in changing rotating direction between drive spline gear and driven assembly (drive shaft, etc.)
Does this indicate wear on this part?
Thanks all,
Weston
