So your gearbox is in similar state-functions and shifts fine, but noise or wear on some component in diff? Has it been diagnosed?
Well, not sure if I have the skills to open up a gearbox, unless I had a 'shelf' unit like you have. Then, if something goes awry, you could still have it reassembled by a pro (like Ericcson in CT, or other competent shop).
I forgot to mention that since I got this car at 195k, now 240k, there has been a 'clunk' that I almost always heard when I first let out clutch in first gear in the morning. It is as if something 'settled' overnite. This is accompanied by a constant rattle or looseness felt on every bump and irregularity in road surface. In fact, for a while I thought that the firm Bilstein struts were partly to blame. Well they may contribute to amplifying the looseness and the rattles, but I'm thinking it originates in the diff.
I mentioned to owner prior to purchase, they said never noticed it, so I finally after replacing engine mounts (3), trans mount, strut mount bearings, all control arm bushings, checking and rechecking ball joints, tie rod ends, pass side CV/axle shaft-I finally decided to pull drivers side halfshaft. Much to my dismayit looked and seemed fine. Dismay because I had ordered a new complete axle/boot kit, ready to replace a 'bad' CV or tripod bearing.
That is when I started removing and examining the inner driver. Which also turned out to be fine. So I may just live with this and take it easy on first gear engagements. Like I do anyways. R & R gearbox of a running car, at 240k, seems to be a bit much for me at this stage of the game, I am afraid.
But if diff bearing is possible culprit, I will keep looking into it and post.
