My car has 178,000 miles, has had biannual replacement of the transmission oil with Quaker State 10W-40 for the last six years. No clue what the original owners had done on this.
I just had a transmission noise that appeared to come from the differential; if I jacked up one side of the car and turned either of the front wheels I heard a fairly loud poping sound that appeard to come from the differential area, it popped about twice for each rotation of the wheel - same story on either side. I brought it to my SAAB-specialist indy, who regularly rebuilds SAAB transmissions, slave cylinders, fuel pumps, etc. and he went for a ride with me; he discouraged me from attempting anything but a complete rebuild or a transmission swap. I specifically asked about the differential bearings, he said that they could not be replaced without tearing down the transmission to some degree ($$$). I would up finding a good used transmission and having it installed.
