Always tough with a modified system Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Tue, 29 Sep 2009 08:07:06 In Reply to: Cold Boost, Everett [Profile/Gallery] , Tue, 29 Sep 2009 01:34:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Colder air is denser. Not only does the intercooler not to have to work as hard, the intercooler works better since it's getting washed with cold, not hot air.
So it's pretty common to be able to get more boost with cool, dry air than with warm, wet (less dense) air.
Since you're running in an overboost condition with a modified system, all bets are off. The ECU might be limiting boost based on intake air temperature - it knows that it has to limit boost under warm conditions. You can also be running out of turbo capability - the turbo can only provide so much compression (boost). Between the turbo and the intercooler, you might not be able to pull as much boost - not a BPC issue.
So it could be detonation (I have minimal faith in octane boosters) - warmer air is hotter (!!) and more prone to knock. It could be the ECU hitting a boost limit schedule based on inlet air temperature. And it could be just the turbo running out of oomph on warm air. Probably a combination of them all.
