need advice on inner cv/tripod failure + mechanic Posted by TODDMO [Email] (#493) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TODDMO) on Sun, 22 Aug 2010 07:22:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 87 9000S/auto driver's side axle has needed work since I purchased it. No clicking, just a feeling of play/binding-up upon initial acceleration. Got it stuck in some mud and had to rock-it to get out. 20 feet later, no forward motion. It broke at the inner tripod. Without the time to fix this, I towed it to a mechanic that works on Saab. New indy for me. He said he would replace the entire halfshaft, which is fine with me.
Problems so far:
1. Mechanic can't get the axle as a whole locally, just the outer cv and axle. He will need to order it from somewhere in Siberia or Indonesia. I assume this because it is taking so long!
2. I call for progress report: he ordered the "right" part, but it arrived incomplete. He keeps taking about an inner cv joint that is unique to 86-88 9000's.
3. I call again: He's going to order the part from Saab!?
Am I missing something? Why can't he just order the inner tripod and hardware and rebuild my existing axle? Is he talking about the companion flange at the trans output?
Before I really lay into this guy for taking so long, what's so special about the early 9000 axles? I've never used this guy, but he has a great website and was voted best shop in the area by a local newspaper.
