Another idea... maybe plug the hole with a piece of rubber cut to fit, and seal the edges of the hole with a gasket material. I replaced a thermostat once and used this gasket glue stuff to seal it up. It was simply incredible how sticky the stuff was, and how impervious it was to heat and anything else once it dried. I think it was called "Permatex Blue Gasket Maker" or something like that.
