peter charak,
"I bump the starter through the under hood connector or push the flywheel teeth with with a screwdriver until the zero on the flywheel is in the right place...." - NO, NO, NO!
DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!
1. Use a 27MM socket on a 24" breaker bar/ratchet to hand turn the crank pulley bolt to TDC #1.
2. Turn the crank pulley counter-clockwise exactly 90 degrees to locate the pistons halfway in their bores. (You can verify identical piston depths by inserting a piece of metal coat hanger in sparkplug holes 1. and 2.)
3. Remove the 12MM tensioner spring retainer bolt, spring, and plastic piece.
4. Remove the 27MM tensioner.
"camshafts off..." UNNECESSARY.
5. Remove ONLY the EXHAUST CAM spocket.
6. Lift the chain off the INTAKE CAM sprocket
"Helper holds chain up and tight..." OK
(Or, you can suspend it from a bungee above it.)
7. With the pistons down, both cams can be safely repositioned without valve/piston interference. Use a wrench on the flats opposite the sprocket end to turn the cams to TDC #1 sprocket markings.
8. Turn the crank pulley clockwise to the TDC #1 position.
9. Pull the chain from the crank onto the EXHAUST CAM sprocket.
10. Insert the INTAKE CAM sprocket mark onto the chain, exactly seven and one-half links from the EXHAUST CAM sprocket mark. CAREFULLY reattach the INTAKE CAM sprocket ensuring its drive dog securely fits the notch on the front of INTAKE CAM notch.
11. Refit the fully retracted 27MM tensioner, plastic piece, spring, and 12MM retaining bolt.
12. Turn the crank four revolutions and verify cam position markings align with the "V" cast on the back of the cam. The cam sprocket marks should on the other side should be at the 12:00 position.
Job WELL DONE!!!
Happy SAABing!
