Iâm helping a friend with a head gasket replacement on a 2.0 16v.
Apparently, It was leaking some oil and coolant on the intake side of the headgasket. My friend removed the camshaft cover, A/C compressor, both manifolds, etc, and then called me, since heâd never done a 16v headgasket before.
When I got to the car, flywheel degree mark was at zero â very visible, large numbers (he said thatâs where the engine had stopped!). Camshaft positions, however, were about 90 camshaft degrees late for #1 piston TDC compression stroke position.
We pulled the tensioner spring, the tensioner, and measured the âpushoutâ. Less than 10mm, so not too bad, but getting up there, and suggesting an original chain, on this apparently low mileage vehicle (but, I never looked at odo). I bumped up the crankshaft until both camshaft markings were in exactly the right position; all valves on #1cylinder closed, and #1 camshaft lobes facing away from each other.
Then, I looked at the flywheel again. Saw another aluminium attachment, similar to the one with the degrees marked on it, and with marks, but no discernible numbers. For future reference, I put a whiteout mark at this ânew zero,â logically diametrically opposite the ânormal zero.â
In my previous headgasket jobs, the ânormal zeroâ and camshaft(s) marks had always lined up as they should.
Head went to headshop, and shaved flat. We then reinstalled it with a new gasket.
So, why the out of sync between flywheel marking and actual #1 TDC on compression stroke position, as evidenced by #1 piston, (so numbered in the headâs spark plug well) flush with the block head, and both sets of cam lobes pointing away from each other?
Crankshaft turns over two revs without any âinterferenceâ noises.
Was the present chain installed on the crankshaft sprocket 180 degrees off? But, this looks like the original chain â not a likely error at the factory. Wouldnât do any harm, but then how does one time the ignition? Just in case, Iâll put a different colour mark at the 16 (or whatever) degrees BTDC position.
Iâm busy as hell, so wonât be firing it up for a few days.
Any opinions on this?
