If you put in an ECU from a '98 5-speed car you will see maybe 10 extra horses under the hood, assuming a good tank of premium and some adaptation runs. I did this on my '96 CSE. Makes a noticeable but not huge difference. If you use an ECU from an automatic tranny car I don't think you'll see any benefit. Those cars had the same Garrett T-25 turbo and 200 hp as your '97 so I doubt there'd be any difference.
Instead, get your existing ECU remapped. My '96 CSE has a remapped Stage 1 ECU from JZW Tuning that gives me about 240 hp (an Aero is 225). This makes the car lots of fun to drive and is an easy, cost-effective upgrade. The ECU from the '98 car is now in my daughter's '96 CS. John at JZW does a great job and you'll like the results.
You can find an ECU from another 5-speed car and have that one remapped if you want to keep your stock one around. AFAIK, you do need to use an ECU from a 5-speed car, but I might be wrong on that. Someone here will know for sure. Or get a hold of John at JZW and ask him.
