I believe, but could be wrong, that the turbo cars HP and Torque numbers were derived using 91 Octane. With the knock sensor and rest of the system it can run regular, and if you keep your foot out of it you won't notice any real performance loss. as noted, don't think you will suffer gas mileage with one over the other unless you are pushing hard all the time, which would result in lower mileage anyway.
