...is the one you have to come up with for YOUR car, YOUR area, and YOUR driving habits.
I've often found that more expensive gas CAN be a "bargain", though it's not always a regular vs premium thing. Much more often, I've found it to be a name brand vs no-name thing.
Even though Shell and Sunoco can be much more costly (particularly Shell!) in my area than off-brands like "Coastal", "Delta", "Raceway", etc. the better mileage I've gotten from those fuels has always offset the price differential for me and my driving.
I know everyone tells you it all comes from the same tank, and it's all the same, so it won't matter whose fuel you buy, that certainly hasn't been what I've experienced.
In fact, the one really oddball thing I've found is that the Irving brand gas I get in Maine has been much, MUCH better for fuel economy for my Saabs (and recently, Volvos) than anything I can get in NJ. I even managed 26 MPG out of a 1990 Volvo 744 turbo, never to be duplicated again. Part of that is almost every tank I get there goes straight into a 320 mile highway trip, but I've yet to match it with the Sunoco or Hess I usually use at home for the trips up.
As always, your mileage may vary... ;-)
