I hit a major milestone in the process today in getting the head off the car.
The gasket wasn't yet completely obliterated, but the rubber coating was worn away in the area of the infamous #10 head bolt.
I was pleasantly surprised to find the original hone marks still present in the cylinders, even after 180k miles.
I also discovered that the #1 cylinder was particularly crudded up with soot and tar. #3 was a little gunky, but #2 and #4 were pretty clean. This lends weight to my theory that the valve stem seals were leaking. After parking the car for a week or more, on first start up there'd be a puff of blue smoke. Normally, I'd suspect turbo oil seals, but the turbo is virtually brand new (less than 20k miles on it).
So here's my question : how do you guys normally clean the deck of the engine block? Is it just scrapers, scotch brite pads and elbow grease? I'm going to get quotes today on sending the head itself out to be cleaned and rebuilt; I think I'd rather have a pro do all that.
