I would think long and hard about doing all the balance hardware if you're doing the timing hardware. I would seriously doubt it's in better shape.
I would try a hand-style impact wrench, and make sure your bit is in good shape - you should not be able to strip a torx bolt.
I'm surprised you're doing this in the car, that may be the root of all your problems. I think you'll spend less time fighting with it, and run into fewer problems, if you just pull it.
