No grinding. Depending on when it happens, Grinding would suggest incomplete retraction, or a problem in the planetary gearset or similar, which is worth investigating further (during start, it's probably internal to the starter, after start, it's probably the bendix not retracting all the way).
The freewheel being needed is normal, thats why it's there, it's always going to take at least a fraction of a second for the bendix to withdraw after the engine catches and you let the key fall back into the run position, and without the freewheel the engine would overdrive the starter gearbox and blow it up.
I only hear it when it's cold, which I assumed was because the grease on he roller cams is all hard. Turning it by hand confirmed this guess. It's sealed, so I'm pretty sure I didn't get much oil into it when I tried (CRC 3-36), but it did improve slightly. Eventually it will require replacement. I didn't find any sticking in the solenoid action, nor a weak spring, which would have suggested a genuine problem. Its a bosch rebuilt starter about 50K old, but I suspect the entire bendix assembly is one of the re-used parts.
