In answer to some questions;
brakes are fine. Plenty of metal, no squeaking.
Mystery noise seems to be initiated by applying brakes, but is not brake related. For example I could bring the car to a complete stop release the brake and still hear the noise for a few seconds (car out of gear, no clutch, no brake).
What I noticed was that the noise seemed to persist a few seconds longer if I was pointed downhill with brakes applied...thus speculation that gravity or deceleration had something to do with it.
Sound is like a light grinding, subtle (not like the starter grinding which is loud, although brief). One mechanic thought it might be related to the strut, but the noise is definitely related to engine (not axle) since it will persist for a few seconds after complete stop.
Final thought is that it may be clutch related.
I am no expert on clutch...isn't there some kind of bearing (sounds like throg?) that is in contact with engine?
