Ok, the noise on the left (drivers) side has gone away, but the starter grinding noise is still there. So I agree that they are distinct issues.
Interestingly I have had the driver side axle and steering knuckle out of the car several times trying to replace a bad axle (CV joint really) and bad wheel bearing. The bearing really vexed me until I figured out how to get the hub to release from the knuckle: I very slightly backed out the hex screw that hold the hub into the knuckle (there are four of them, and I did this after removing the entire knuckle), then used a punch and hammer to apply force directly down into the center of the screw (I had the knuckle supported on bricks so the hub would drop free). I used an alternating pattern of force so as not to stress any one screw. After a few times around the hub released from the knuckle, I then removed the screws completely and the hub came right out (I should explain that it had been completely frozen inside the knuckle...). BTW one hub came apart the first time I removed the axle (that is, the inner race fell out, exposing the balls), a second hub came apart as I removed the axle from my parts car, so this was the third (and last!) chance to get a good hub/bearing...
Anyway, after several months of monkeying around (and I am convinced no monkey could have done better) I have a good axle and a good bearing on the driver side!
The one lingering issue is an intermittent ABS light. It comes on most of the time, usually after some distance (so not right after startup) but *sometimes* it doesn't come on at all. It does not appear to be speed related, and the ABS function appears to work (had one day of snow so far). There is plenty of fluid in the reservoir, and I have removed and replaced the 10amp ABS fuse in the engine compartment (engine off...). Have also cleaned the sensor where it inserts into the knuckle, and removed excess grease from the axle in that area.
So, I think I might have a problem with the ABS pump?
It might explain the mysterious noise (now gone) and the ABS light. I guess the ABS light could also be related to the sensor, but I think I read that a bad sensor would trigger the ABS light immediately after startup/self check.
