I had to get AAA to tow me home yesterday (in my wife's 98 9kCSE)! We were driving down the expressway when the car stumbled and the check engine light came on. I pulled over, but car was now idling fine. Drive about 10 more miles and car stumbles then stalls. I pull over and replace the DI cassette with a (used) spare from my trunk. Another 10 or 15 miles and get exactly the same problem. Car stalls, I pull over, and it restarts OK.
At this point I'm about 10 miles from K&N Auto in Ann Arbor, a great Saab shop. So I crawl through Ann Arbor traffic for about half an hour, with no problems, to get to K&N. They put the Tech 2 on it but all they get from that is the misfire code. They suspect the DI cassette, as do I, but to have 2 go so quickly in exactly the same way seems unlikely. They also suggest the CPS as a possible cuplrit.
I have about 45 miles to get home so decide to go mostly on the backroads since the problem only seems to happen at highway speeds. I have no problems until I do rejoin the expressway and after about 8 miles of 65mph driving it does it again - this time it will not restart. I put back the original DI cassette but no help. The car will run for a second and then quit. After a while it would run for a few seconds then quit. By the time I got home on the back of a tow truck it started and idled fine - which is frustrating because it makes it so much harder to troubleshoot.
What issue would explain no problems at round town driving but issues on the expressway? Could this be a CPS issue? Could I just have had two DI cassettes go bad that quickly?
Fuel pump was replaced about 3 years ago. I put in the correct new NGK plugs a couple of months ago.
Thanks
Rod
