That's it. Perfect fit. By "perfect fit" I means it fills the tray in my '96 without hanging over the edge, it isn't too tall or too wide, and both cables reach the terminals easily. And the hold-down hardware works with it.
AutoZone is wrong to recommend the Group 47. It would have to straddle the tray. I wouldn't want the thin upturned metal lip of my tray digging into a battery. My luck isn't that good.
Group sizes 41 and 91 look like good bets if you can't find a 34R, but cables may not reach.
34R is likely to be around for at least a few more years. A battery application guide from Carquest shows that in addition to Carquest a 34R battery is available from Interstate, East Penn, Exide and Napa. We know AutoZone has one as well as Optima and probably a private label brand or two.
What is really interesting in the Carquest guide is that Carquest thinks their 34R (model 34RHD70) is a suitable battery for lots of vehicles. As long as people are buying 34R batteries, even if it is not the correct group size, the manufacturers and retailers will continue to offer them.
You can also count on a 9000 to kill a battery every 3 years.
