The catalyst monitor truly is a PITA for many of us, glad you got it to run. I don't know if a random misfire could trick it into diagnosing a P1171. If the code returns you have the tools to retrieve the freeze frame data so that you'll know what the conditions were when the fault was detected. Whatever triggered the code, you were in closed loop mode and a real or perceived lean condition pushed the fuel trim to +25% for more than 20 seconds.
The final check in the Trionic manual for a P1171 is to start the engine and let it idle until the coolant reaches 140F (60C), and then continue to let it idle for another 5 minutes. If this doesn't trigger the code then hopefully you're out of the woods!
