I tend to agree. For most folks, buy synthetic for the longer change intervals, not for better engine wear. I'm sure it does protect the engine better, but on a modern engine I just don't buy that it matters for a driver planning to keep their car less than 300k. I want to say it was consumer reports that got a fleet of taxis to go half conventional and half synthetic and they couldn't find any wear differences between the two groups I've got 328k on my '87 9k on all conventional. It uses some oil, but I'm pretty sure it's the turbo seals (original turbo). I'd run synthetic on a newer car of course, who doesn't want to have to change their oil less often.
