Front brake backing plate rusted off Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Mon, 11 Dec 2017 09:02:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Heard a grinding noise from the front left when driving, just checked it out and the sheet metal backing plate for the disc brake had rusted off and was grinding against the inner part of the wheel. It looked like swiss cheese, actually managed to pull it out without taking anything else apart!
It looks like both eeuroparts.com and thesaabsite.com carry replacements, though they seem a bit pricey for a piece of stamped sheet steel. I probably won't have a chance to replace this until after the holidays but running without it for a while does not look like it should be a problem since, unlike drum brakes, the backing plate is not a structural part of the brake system. (Though probably best to avoid driving in bad weather until replaced.)
Gotta love life in the rust belt!
