Thank you Sam, Bill, Dick! I really appreciate you taking the time to provide such detailed info. I hoped to spend more time in the garage and get back with updates, alas not much progress yet. I did notice more wet spots further down the back (firewall) side of the engine, some wet hoses too. Need to learn names of components before I can easily describe what I see. Difficult to get a good photo in that area unfortunately.
Will get a portable light and take the DI cassette off one of these evenings, to get a better clue about the condition of the valve cover gasket. If I need a new gasket, the cover needs to come off, in which case I would definitely install the old style distributor hole plug.
I might invest in some sort of lift or jack stand too, but before all that, I think I will take the car to Petersen Auto & have them do a *post* purchase inspection :) I just need some affirmation that the car has good "bones"...
