With loss of power like that, if it's the head gasket, you're going to have lost compression in a cylinder or two. I've done head gaskets twice on my 9000 turbos. Not a terrible job, but time consuming. Good opportunity to get some other things attended to, as well, like new balance shaft and timing chains and sprockets, rebuild alternator, new water pump. Quasi has a nice write-up on the balance shaft and timing chain system, with photos.
