As I removed cylinder head, the gasket actually looked good. In fact, it had telltale signs of being fairly recent.
As I turned to inspect bottom of head, I could see a big chunk missing out of cylinder # 2 exhaust valve. Hence zero compression.
In addition, there was a really thick, mineral-like layer of deposits on ALL of the intake and exhaust valves. Looked unlike the rest of the clean head and intact gasket.
All the head bolts were evenly tight, and of the thick-shank, older, ‘re-usable’ style.
There was 13 mm of extension on the timing chain guide plunger.
I really would like to figure out why all of these deposits on a low-mileage engine with a head gasket job . Although I’ve only driven it a few thousand miles in six years, it looks like these deposits have been there a while . Maybe whoever did the previous work did not deck the head or clean the valves. But the top of the head looking very clean , almost shiny.
I’m thinking maybe the high oil consumption has been due to old, hard valve guide seals that may not have ever been replaced.
