I'm in the middle of doing this job right now and just came inside to lookup a question on this.
I made my own tool by putting screws into the tips of a large handscrew wood clamp and cutting the heads off them. Worked fine for removal and just now compressed the snap ring enough for reassembly easily.
If I may throw my question into this thread; the snap ring has one tapered side. I assume this goes inboard so that the full (non-tapered) face of the snap ring is what retains it. However, I cannot get it back into its groove. I pressed the cover down with a clamp and still can't get it. Is my assumption backwards, and the taper-side faces outwards?
