Way to think outside the box! I don't remember which way my snap ring is installed. I just cleaned it up an put it back the way it was. I could tell by the markings on it which way it was installed. I had a tough time getting mine to come free. I sprayed it with PB Blaster and one side was still stuck. I wrecked a small screwdriver point trying to tap it free using the hole in the end. Pretty tough to swing a hammer in there. Once I got one side out of the groove, it eventually popped out.
