These are the events leading up to the problem.
I had a clanking noise similar to a loose cat bracket in park and idling. Some slight revs the noise went away. This car only goes 3600/3800 miles per year. ,166k miles on the clock.Had a leaky transmission line from the cooler (rusted out metal) where all of a sudden shifts were all over the place. Replaced the line and lost fluid during the process. Added 3-4 qts. 3 Qts of Tranny Fluid has been changed out at about 7K synthetic oil changes of the crankcase oil. 3 qts. Since 103k. Tranny fluid looks fine and no particulates on the stick. Haven't dumped 3-4 qts and checked the filter. That's the lead in.
Was having a rattle which I thought was a loose Cat bracket..Had many loose cat brackets along the way. Thought it might be coming from the tranny recently. Up until a couple of weeks ago no major noises from the Tranny Drove 12 miles stopped and didn't have an issue. Drove another 12 miles and when trying to put it in park it seemed like all hell was breaking loose. Turned the car off in drive no noise. Put it I park and turned it off and removed the key.
Tested it the next day and the horrible metal on metal sound is in Park and Neutral. All forward gears and reverse are completely quiet. Can't figure this out. If the torque converter works in gear why not park and neutral unless I have a stuck valve in the valve body and the torque converter doesn't diengsge and gears are grinding or just a toast torque converter that works in gear and not in park and neutral. Some of the dianostics write ups point the noise at the Torque Converter. Help.
In trying to isolate this issue all my research points to Torque Converter or it could be a valve body issue. Why would the torque converter work in gear but NOT in park or Neutral?
Does anybody know how fluid from the torque converter is connected to the gear box. Having trouble figuring out that connection. If the torque converter is toast I'm wondering how much debree can get to the gear box. Also does anybody have a source for Torque Converters. Saab around $1400. Haven't turned the old beast on since the event and test.
Anybody ever had this or have a clue where to look. Thank for your help.
