I've replaced the blower in my '97 CSE and while it's a bit of a PITA, as you note most cars need the entire dash pulled out and compared to that the 9000 is a cakewalk. Best to replace heater core while in there as well - the procedure is the same. (I didn't only because the previous owner had recently replaced it but hadn't bothered to replace the fan motor.)
According to the Quasimotors writeup, the older model 9000s are more difficult. The Saabnet software seems to have a bug where I can't make a link to the page work, so copy and paste this, taking out the extra "http" in the middle of it that Saabnet keeps inserting:
