I think my compressor is the one JerseySaab identifies (picture attached). I'm assuming the white plastic piece is a connector, not a sensor. (Clearly, I'm not a technical guy.) The refrigerant might be low, though the (typically anemic) AC seems to do adequately here in SoCal. And, no, the EDU and other instruments work fine when the compressor cuts out.
I'm not sure about the pressure switch that Simon S mentions. If these are readily accessible and cheap to replace, maybe I should just do that. Since the car is a 97, is there also a water temp sensor I should consider replacing?
Maybe Bernie can confirm if there is an overtemp sensor for this compressor.
Los Angeles summers can't be endured without functioning AC. I will report back when I get to the bottom of this.
