Stalling when cold issue and checking the IAC valve Posted by huxley99 [Email] (#2339) [Profile/Gallery] (more from huxley99) on Sun, 28 Aug 2022 05:21:55 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have a 1986 9000T with manual transmission that idles ok when warmed up. But when cold it runs for a second and then the idle speed drops and it stalls, and I have to re-start it 10-12 times until it will run without stalling. But when it is still cold the idling speed varies spontaneously between 1500-2000 RPM to just above stalling until it is warm enough to settle to ~900 RPM.
As part of trying to figure out the issue with the cold idle speed I have started to check the idle air control valve (IAC) using the procedure in the service manual with the car warmed up; I have attached the first page of the check procedure. Step 2 checks out -- when I restrict air through the intake air hose the car stalls. However when I remove the air hose per step 5, instead of the idling speed increasing, the car stalls. When I try to restart the car with the air hose removed, it behaves like it does when it is cold -- runs for a second and stalls. I have not have a the IAC out yet to inspect it, but does this suggest a problem with the IAC valve itself, or another issue somewhere else? Thank you for any suggestions...
