I have owned five 9000's since 1989 and have done this job several times. It is easier on post 1994 cars but still a PITA. Therefore, I have adopted this approach which makes changing the heater core very easy.
I take the 9000 down to my local shop and have them suck the refrigerant out of the system. Then, back in my garage, the AC lines are disconnected where they attach to the block. Afterwards I remove the plastic housing that contains the evaporator from the car. This allows me to remove the evaporator and clean out the gunk that accumulates in the bottom of the plastic housing and sometimes prevents condensate water from draining.
The cost of having the system drained and refilled is worth it to me. It also lets me see if there are any leaks in the AC system. I live in Florida so a properly functioning AC system is important.
