The lifters can fail from old age it can also fail from lack of oil changes. It's going to be hard to narrow it down to which one it is since there is 16 of them there are websites out there that still carry these they are expensive but if you can find some good used ones you should be all right to swap out a couple in the vicinity of the noise and see if that fixes it before you spend the money on replacing all 16. There can also be lack of oil pressure causing them to tick as well I have seen a couple of 9,000 engines have stuff in the pickup tube maybe a good idea to pop that oil pan off and see that there's nothing in the pickup tube while you're down there replace all of the O-rings from the pickup tube and the tube that goes from side to side just to make sure. There's any kind of oil leak around the oil pump that could also be an issue losing oil pressure right there at the pump. Let us know what you find out.
