I understand the nature of valve tick and what's happening mechanically, and that it likely means a lifter has failed in some way. What I'm trying to find out is what causes valve lifter failure in these engines. Is it simply that the lifters get clogged with gunk or debris? I've seen lots of posts and videos about successfully disassembling and cleaning them rather than replacement. I may try that after trying a good flush. I've had luck getting rid of lifter tick with motor flush, so I guess I'll try it again here.
BTW, I've had the pan off the engine and removed the oil pump pickup. Despite having 170k miles, both were very clean. The engine had clearly been well maintained. Engine runs flawlessly except for that lifter tick after getting up to temp, which thinking about it, makes me suspect oil pressure may not be adequate. Maybe I'll install a pressure gauge and see...
